Zenkoji Temple
Zenkoji is a non-sectarian Buddhist temple in Nagano City. Its main hall features the unique shikomizukuri structure and is considered a masterpiece of mid-Edo Buddhist architecture, boasting the largest scale in eastern Japan. Enshrining a historic Amida Buddha said to be the oldest in Japan, Zenkoji became so famous that people said, 'once in a lifetime, a visit to Zenkoji.' Today it attracts even more visitors during the Gokaicho held every Year of the Ox and Sheep.
Sanada Clan History Museum
Before constructing Ueda Castle, the Sanada clan resided here. Locally called 'O-yashiki,' it is also loved as a famous azalea spot. The site preserves earthworks, square gates, and stable remains, offering a rare, nearly complete example of a medieval lord's residence. The surrounding area has been developed into O-yashiki Park.
Ueda Castle
Ueda Castle Park centers on the former stronghold of the renowned Sanada clan and serves as a hub for tourism in Ueda City. With a keyaki-lined avenue said to be 100 years old and about a thousand cherry trees, the spacious park is enveloped in flowers and greenery.
